Harrison College using social media to award full ride scholarship

Public will decide winner via college's Facebook page

Harrison College, a private sector college serving 6,000 students at 12 campuses in Indiana and Ohio as well as Online, announced today that the college is hosting a contest on its Facebook page to award a full tuition scholarship to one of two high school seniors. The contest will run through March 31.

McCartney Walden, a senior at Blackford High School in Hartford City, and Cassidy Jones, a senior at F.J. Reitz High School in Evansville, are the finalists for the scholarship. The finalists were chosen by Harrison College's Scholarship Committee based on their 500-word essays about why they are career focused and success driven students, a letter of recommendation from a school or work reference, and a letter of recommendation from a relative. The winning student will receive a full tuition scholarship to apply toward an associate's degree, and the runner-up will receive a half-tuition scholarship toward an associate's degree.

The public can vote for the student they believe is most deserving of the scholarship by visiting Harrison College's Facebook page at www.facebook.com/HarrisonCollege. After "Liking" the page, voters should click on "Contests" in the panel on the left side of the page. They will then be directed to a page where they can view a video from each of the students, and vote for the student of their choice. There is a one vote per person limit. The winner will be announced via the Harrison College Facebook page on April 1.

"This particular scholarship is being offered to high school seniors, and we wanted to engage the applicants and their friends in the process," said Jason Konesco, Harrison College president. "Knowing that high school students are active in social media, we thought that this would be a unique way of choosing the winner. Both of our finalists are very deserving of the scholarship, and we will be pleased with the result regardless of the outcome."

Walden plans to use her scholarship to pursue an A.A.S. degree in Human Resources at Harrison College's Muncie Campus. Jones says that she would like to pursue an A.A.S. degree in Veterinary Technology at Harrison College's Evansville Campus.

In addition to the full and half-tuition scholarships for which the finalists are competing, Harrison College also awarded two $2,500 scholarships to the contest's semi-finalists. Morgan Egan from Whiteland High School will apply her $2,500 scholarship toward an A.A.S. degree in Veterinary Technology at Harrison College's Indianapolis-Northwest Campus, and Jessica Huber from Rising Sun High School will pursue an A.A.S. degree in Surgical Technology at Harrison College's Indianapolis-East Campus.

Harrison College makes more than $500,000 in scholarships available to its students each year.

Dr. John Woods, Director of International Operations for Harrison College, joined Mrs. Aarathy Sampathy, President and CEO of SSIM, in making the announcement.

"Harrison College is extremely pleased to have signed an MOU with Siva Sivani," Woods said.
Harrison College has been developing international partnerships with colleges and universities, businesses, and governments for two years. The college currently has nearly 100 international students studying in South Africa and Bangladesh. Its goal is to have international partnerships on all five continents within five years.

SSIM is a well known business school in India. The college ranks 30th among the nation's 4,000 business schools surveyed by Barons in February 2011.

Harrison College Veterinary Assisting Program Receives NAVTA Accreditation

College Is One Of Six Schools Nationally To Receive Accreditation

Dr. Myra Jones, national dean of the Harrison College School of Veterinary Technology (harrison.edu), has announced that the Veterinary Assisting program offered at the college's Indianapolis Northwest campus has received accreditation through the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA). The mission of NAVTA is to represent and promote the profession of veterinary technology.

Harrison College's Veterinary Assisting program is designed to prepare students to enter into a career as a veterinary assistant, a part of the veterinary team whose duties include basic animal husbandry, animal restraint, preparation of laboratory samples, oral and topical medicine administration, sterilization of surgical and laboratory equipment, sanitization of animal areas, and additional basic veterinary office practices. Students are required to complete 36 credit hours to receive program certification. The curriculum covers all topics that an assistant would need in a veterinary facility, from behavior and restraint techniques to medical ethics and office assisting.

Harrison College started its Veterinary Assisting program in April 2011, and applied for the NAVTA accreditation in July. The accreditation allows graduates to take a national certification exam to become Approved Veterinary Assistants. Harrison College is one of only six programs nationally that have received NAVTA accreditation.

"Because we only began offering the program in April, we haven't yet graduated anyone from the Veterinary Assisting program," Dr. Jones said. "Receiving NAVTA accreditation so quickly is important, because it means that all of our students are going to graduate from an accredited program."

Harrison College's School of Veterinary Technology also offers an Associate of Applied Science degree (A.A.S.) in Veterinary Technology. That program is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).

Harrison College to Offer B.S. in Business Management at Elkhart Campus

INDIANAPOLIS - Harrison College (www.harrison.edu), a private sector college with more than 6,000 students studying at 12 campuses and Online, announced today that it will offer a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Business Management at its Elkhart campus beginning with its January 2012 Quarter.

The program is specifically designed for people who have already attained an Associate's Degree in Business Management. What makes Harrison College's program offering unique is its flexible schedule. Students are required to attend class only once every two weeks - a two hour block every other Saturday - while the remaining coursework is completed online. Instructors are available to tutor students every Saturday. Most students will complete the degree program in two years (7 quarters).

"Our decision to offer a B.S. in Business Management is based on feedback we received from the community," said Justin Elliott, president of Harrison College's Elkhart Campus. "Many business leaders - including those that serve on our advisory board - have indicated that a bachelor's degree is desired for many of the positions they have open at this time."

"As the Elkhart Community continues to diversify, I am pleased to see that Harrison College will be offering a B.S. in Business Management that can be offered to Adult Students looking to grow," said Rachelle Shuff, Service Center Manager for Teachers Credit Union in Elkhart. "This type of degree with flexible scheduling and an accelerated program for students will benefit the growing changes in the workplace. Harrison College listened to our local community and responded with an excellent program."

Harrison College believes that the flexible scheduling option will prove to be very popular. "For someone who is currently working and trying to raise a family, pursuing further education can be difficult," Elliott said. "Sometimes, there aren't enough hours in the day. But if you can complete the majority of your coursework online and attend class for only two hours every other Saturday, obtaining your bachelor's degree becomes more manageable."

Harrison College offers 38 programs in five schools of study (Business, Health Sciences, Information Technology, Criminal Justice, and Veterinary Technology) and through its culinary division, The Chef's Academy. Harrison College alumni are eligible for lifetime employment assistance from the college.
Harrison College named 'Military Friendly School' by G.I. Jobs

G.I. Jobs, the premier magazine for military personnel transitioning into civilian life, has awarded Harrison College the designation of "Military Friendly School" for the third consecutive year. The 2012 Military Friendly Schools list honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America's military service members and veterans as students.

In its effort to help student veterans find the right school, G.I. Jobs incorporated a survey of student veterans for the first time. This feedback provides prospective military students with insight into the student veteran experience at a particular institution based on peer reviews from current students. Student veteran survey feedback can be viewed at www.militaryfriendlyschools.com/2012 list.

"The Military Friendly Schools list is the go-to resource for prospective student veterans searching for schools that provide the right overall experience," Michael Dakduk, Executive Director for the Student Veterans of America, said. "Nothing is more compelling than actual feedback from current student veterans."

Service members and veterans can also meet individual student veterans from Harrison College virtually on the website, to learn more about the college and how it helped those students transition from the military to an academic environment.

Harrison College is engaged in a wide variety of initiatives that benefit current military service members, veterans, and their spouses and dependents. Some of their military initiatives and credentials include:

· Formation of a Military Advisory Board

· Concurrent Admissions Program for Army Enlistees (ConAP) participant

· Military Experience Credit granted based on American Council on Education (ACE)

· Financial Aid Analysts who specialize in Veteran Affairs benefits

· Flexible Military Withdrawal policy for service members who are deployed

· Military Task Force members assigned to each campus

· Creation of a Spouse and Dependent Scholarship

· Participation in Imagine America Military Award Program (MAP) scholarships

Harrison College Offering eTextbooks

Students studying Online at Harrison College will save as much as 20%-30% off the costs of their textbooks, thanks to the college's implementation of a new eTextbook system. The program will be available when Harrison College's Fall Term begins September 26.

Harrison College says that eTextbooks will be available to Online students for 41 courses, represented by more than 1,000 of the college's 6,100 total students. Harrison College has more than 1,800 students taking 100% of their classes online, and approximately 4,000 take at least one class online.

"Obviously, saving 20%-30% off the cost of textbooks is a huge benefit for our students," said Dr. Dennis Trinkle, Provost and Chief Academic Officer for Harrison College. "But there are other benefits as well. Students will be confident that they have the most up-to-date version of the book, and they will have access anywhere they go." Trinkle explained that the eTextbooks can be accessed on iPhones, iPads, and laptops.

There are also benefits for faculty. Perhaps the most significant is the ability to add notes, examples and updates to the text for all students to see. The system also provides faculty with the fastest, easiest, and most eco-friendly method of evaluating textbooks for possible adoption in the classroom.

Harrison College is partnering with CourseSmart and Cengage Learning on the project. CourseSmart is the world's largest digital course materials provider.
Harrison College students receive free laptops

Harrison College will pilot a program at the Terre Haute campus this month, making free laptops available to third-year students pursuing their Bachelor's Degrees in Criminal Justice, and second-year students pursuing Bachelor's Degrees in Business Management. Faculty members who have those students in class will also receive a free laptop.

Each student in the cohort will receive a Hewlett Packard 4530S Pro Book, to be used for class work. Harrison College will donate the laptops to the student upon graduation. The laptops will come complete with Microsoft Office Professional Plus and free help desk support from Matrix.

"The benefits of this program are many," Brennan Randolph, Harrison College's Terre Haute campus president, said. "It ensures that all students have access to the latest technology, makes them more computer savvy, better prepares them for the workforce, and will likely improve retention rates."

Harrison College will begin the pilot program with the beginning of the Fall Term on September 26, 2011. An additional class at the college's Indianapolis Downtown campus will receive laptops for the Winter Term in January. If the pilot program goes well, it could be expanded to all 6,100 students in June 2012. The college would institute a technology fee to cover costs of the laptops if the program in adopted college-wide next year.

Harrison College offering five new programs

Harrison College, a 6,100 student private sector college based in Indianapolis, announced today that it will offer five new degree programs when students start the new Fall Term on September 26. The new programs are: Interactive Media Design (Bachelor's Degree), Logistics (Associate's Degree), Project Management (Bachelor's Degree), Fashion Merchandising (Bachelor's Degree), and Health Informatics (Bachelor's Degree).

Demand in the job market was the primary factor in the decision to add the new programs, according to Harrison College officials. "We're providing our students with more than an education. We're providing them with the skills and knowledge that are valued by employers in today's increasingly competitive job market," Dr. Dennis Trinkle, provost and Chief Academic Officer, said. "Our research indicates that employers will have a need for graduates from these five degree programs."

Interactive Media Design - B.S. Degree

Students with a bachelor's degree in Interactive Media Design may qualify for occupations as Computer Software Engineers - Applications, Computer Software Engineers - Systems Software, and Computer & Information Systems Managers. According to a report from the Indiana Chamber of Commerce entitled Indiana's Adult Education and Workforce Skills Performance Report: Preparing Adults for a Brighter Future, those jobs are among the fastest growing high-wage jobs in the state of Indiana. The program will be available at the Indianapolis-Northwest campus and Online.

Logistics - A.S. Degree

Conexus Indiana, whose mission is to position Indiana as a global leader in manufacturing and logistics, collaborated with Harrison College and industry leaders in developing the curriculum for the college's new Logistics program. It's the only Logistics program offered in the state that was designed by Conexus and industry leaders. Logistics is a $1.3 trillion industry in the U.S., and Indiana's employment rate in the sector is 60 percent higher than the national average. There are nearly 6,100 logistics employers in the state employing more than 250,000 Hoosiers, and employment in the sector is expected to grow by more than 20 percent across the state in the next five years. The program will be available at the Indianapolis-Downtown campus and Online.

Project Management - B.S. Degree

The idea to offer a bachelor's degree in Project Management is the result of input from the leadership team at Eli Lilly and Company. The world's tenth largest pharmaceuticals company, based in Indianapolis, had a need for a local B.S. program to which it could send employees. A Harrison College review and analysis of local job postings in the market revealed that the degree is highly coveted by local employers. The program will be available at the Indianapolis-Downtown campus and Online.

Fashion Merchandising - B.S. Degree

Harrison College previously offered an associate's degree in Fashion Merchandising, but feedback from several companies who hired the graduates from that program - including Nordstrom, Macy's, and Von Maur - expressed a desire for Harrison College to expand the program to include a bachelor's degree. Research from Eduventures (the leading research consultant for higher education institutions) revealed that most purchasing managers, wholesale buyers, and retail buyers hold at least a bachelor's degree. The program will be available at the Indianapolis-Downtown campus and Online.

Health Informatics - B.S. Degree

Projected job growth - both nationally and in Indiana - between 2008-2018 for Medical Records and Health Information Technicians is 20 percent or higher. Similar job growth is expected nationally for Informatics Nurse Specialists during that period. Input from several area businesses - including Medical Animatics, Regenstrief Institute, and St. Francis Hospitals - led to the creation for this degree. The program will be available at the Indianapolis-Northwest campus and Online.

The five new programs bring Harrison College's total number of programs offered to 38. Harrison College has five schools of study: Business, Criminal Justice, Health Sciences, Information Technology, and Veterinary Technology. The college operates 11 campuses in Indiana and one in Columbus, OH, as well as its Online division. Harrison College also operates a culinary division, The Chef's Academy, with campuses in Indianapolis and Raleigh, NC.

Harrison, Community Partnering to Train Nurses

Harrison College and Community Health Network announced today that they have entered into an affiliation agreement that will allow Harrison College to use Community Hospital facilities to train nursing students. The affiliation agreement follows an announcement in April that the Associate Degree in Nursing Program offered at Harrison College's Indianapolis East campus had received accreditation from the National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission (NLNAC).

The agreement allows Harrison College nursing students the opportunity to participate in a clinical education program at ten Community Hospital facilities, including Community Hospitals North, South, , Indiana Surgery Centers, and The Indiana Heart Hospital. Students will observe surgeries and emergency room procedures as a part of the program.

"The faculty and students in Harrison College's Nursing Program are appreciative that they will have access to some of the finest health care professionals and facilities in Indiana," said Natalie Hall, interim national dean of School of Health Science for Harrison College. "This is real world training, coupled with our national accreditation from NLNAC, will make Harrison College nursing grads among the most sought-after in the state."

"On behalf of Community Health Network and the greater nursing community, I would like to congratulate Harrison College on its recent NLNAC accreditation. It is a privilege to partner with our local schools of nursing to provide high quality clinical experiences and foster powerful nursing practices that will enrich the future of health care."

Harrison College also learned this week that 100 percent of the 31 graduates in the 2011 class passed the NCLEX exam, qualifying them to become Registered Nurses. It is extremely rare for 100 percent of the graduates at any college or university to pass the exam on its first attempt.

"We are extremely proud of our graduates," Hall said. "The fact that they all passed the NCLEX is evidence of their hard work and dedication, and of the quality of the education they received."

Harrison College offering scholarships to Boys & Girls Clubs members

Harrison College announced today that it will award $2,500 scholarships to ten members of Boys and Girls Clubs in 2012.

The announcement came during a ceremony at the college's administrative offices in Indianapolis this morning. More than 60 Boys and Girls Clubs members from Indianapolis, Noblesville, Bloomington, Madison, and Huntington attended the announcement, and later toured Harrison College's three Indianapolis campuses.

The scholarships will be available to high school seniors who graduate by June 2012. To be eligible, students must be a member of a Boys and Girls Club, apply online at www.harrison.edu, complete a 500-word essay, and submit a letter of recommendation from a Boys and Girls Club advisor. Deadline for applications is March 1, 2012. Scholarship recipients will be notified of their selection by April 2, 2012. The scholarship money will be divided evenly over the students' first four terms. Students will be required to maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher to remain eligible for the scholarship.

"The Boys and Girls Clubs have a long history of preparing young people for life after school," Jason Konesco, Harrison College president, said. "Unfortunately, many of their members never consider continuing their education beyond high school. By exposing these kids to a college setting and offering scholarships to those who are interested in attending Harrison College, we can potentially help ten kids go to college who wouldn't have gone otherwise."

Harrison College will make more than $500,000 in scholarships available in 2011-2012. The college currently has 6,100 students in its five schools of study, and offers more than 30 degree programs at 12 campuses and Online. It also operates The Chef's Academy, one of the nation's premiere culinary schools, with campuses in Indianapolis and Raleigh-Durham.

Indianapolis-based Harrison College announced today that it will offer deeply discounted veterinary services to military personnel through its School of Veterinary Technology. Anyone possessing a current military identification card is eligible for the program, which will be held July 15 from noon-4pm. Appointments are necessary, and can be arranged by calling (317) 873-6500.

The services offered will include Basic Wellness/Routine Check-Ups, Canine /Feline Vaccinations and Microchipping (including registration). A nominal fee will be charges to cover Harrison College's costs to provide the service (see service and fee chart below).

Harrison College's Indianapolis Northwest campus, located at 6300 Technology Center Drive, will serve as the host. Students and faculty from the college's School of Veterinary Technology - including Dr. Elizabeth Clark - will perform the veterinary procedures.

The program is being offered to fill a void that was created when the Fort Knox Veterinary Treatment Facility discontinued offering services in central Indiana. Those services had previously been offered monthly to the local military community at Fort Benjamin Harrison. Harrison College officials have indicated that they will consider offering the services on a regular basis if there is a demand for it.

"Members of our nation's armed services give so much to our country, and Harrison College wants to give something back to them," said Dr. Myra Jones, Interim Dean of Harrison College's School of Veterinary Technology. "This is just a small token of our gratitude. But if we can make their lives easier in any way, it's certainly worth the effort."

Veterinary services to be offered, and the associated cost:

Net Literacy student volunteers eligible for Harrison College scholarships

Net Literacy, a student founded organization that increases access to computers across Indiana, announced today that each of its student volunteers has been offered a $3,000 scholarship to attend Harrison College this fall to pursue a Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology. The arrangement marks the first time Harrison College has extended a scholarship offer of this nature.

Net Literacy, founded by middle school student Daniel Kent in 2003, has organized thousands of students who volunteer to provide increased computer access, Internet safety awareness, and digital inclusion throughout Indiana. Since its inception, student volunteers have increased computer access to over 150,000 Indiana residents. During the last three years alone, students have donated more than 12,000 computers to Indiana schools, libraries, and other nonprofit organizations in 38 Indiana counties. Net Literacy's Honorary Board includes Indiana Senator Richard Lugar, Lt. Governor Becky Skillman and Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Bennett, and their service learning programs have been recognized by two American Presidents. In 2010, the Federal Communications Commission cited three of Net Literacy's programs in the National Broadband Plan prepared for Congress.

Harrison College operates 11 campuses in Indiana, and one campus in Ohio. Students have the option of taking classes at one of the campuses, online, or a hybrid of both. The college also has a culinary division - The Chef's Academy - with a campus in Indianapolis and a new campus opening this summer in North Carolina.

Net Literacy and Harrison College have partnered in the past. Last year, Harrison College donated computers and networking equipment that will assist Net Literacy in its mission to build 12 computer labs in churches, charter schools, and community centers each year.

"Net Literacy is grateful for Harrison College's support," said Daniel Kent, Founder of Net Literacy and now a college student. "As an all-volunteer nonprofit where students comprise 50% of the board of directors, we partner with socially-minded organizations that give back to the community they service. We are proud that Harrison College is our partner and their computer donations will enable us to build additional computer labs and the scholarships they offer makes college more attainable, especially to high school students that are the first in their family to attend college. Thank you Harrison College!"

"The students who have volunteered their time and talents to Net Literacy deserve to be recognized and rewarded," Jason Konesco, Harrison College president, said. "A person who gives back to his or her community at such a young age is likely to be an asset to the community for years to come. Harrison College is proud to offer these scholarships to students of such high character and integrity." Although Harrison College offers more than 30 degree programs across its five schools of study (Business, Criminal Justice, Health Sciences, Information Technology and Veterinary Technology), the scholarship is intended for Net Literacy students who want to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology. In 2011-2012, Harrison College will make more than $500,000 in scholarships available to its students.

The Net Literacy scholarship is the brainchild of Marvin Bailey, president of Harrison College's Indianapolis Northwest campus. Marvin has served as the vice chairman of Net Literacy and as a member of its Board of Directors since 2005.
